about

Released by Pesanta Urfolk.

Upon first listen, it might seem strange to call there is light in the body, there is blood in the sun a devotional album. But in many ways, that’s exactly what it is: each song is an altar woven from tapestries of minor chords, voices, delicate drones and violent sprawls of sound, offered up to house the haunting presence of a hidden god. While the lyrical themes and obsessive delivery provide the album with a sense of unity, musically and tonally its constituent moments are quite unique: from the ghost town drone of “nida,” to the strange Appalachian shamanism of “wounded stag,” from the tidal beauty of “blackbird” to the blackwater surf reverberations of “king winter,” there is light finds Lux Interna exploring territory only hinted at by their previous releases. And though their earlier material was often associated with the genre of neofolk, there is light evidences a dramatic musical shift marked by a heavier, more ritualistic sound. The songs here incorporate electric instruments, violin, viola, loops and percussion and are haunted by flourishes of ghostly banjo and resonant fingerstyle guitar. With intimations of the blues, folk music, and old time country weaving seamlessly into passages reminiscent of postpunk, neofolk, or even doom, Lux Interna seems to articulate a hazy vision of some long lost American spirit; a spirit that appears here in a dark form no doubt, but which may just hint at the promise of light, hidden within its deep shades of night.

Track Name: king winter
sharp in animal tongue
burning fire of language come
in the quiet months of summer
I've seen what You have done

alabaster, You cut so coldly
I've seen You lie against the sky
with Your teeth catching clouds
and Your fingers strum
these minor chords of night

caught up in these notes
there is winter yes and
oh – You Silent King
a hint and a heavy cry
stretched out as the stream of voices go by
sing! Your lead reply
(sing Your lead reply)

night and winter tumble
note for note and eye to eye
through the skull-white silence they fly
they dance in lockstep time
with a rhyming word and withered cry
a note for a note and an eye for an eye

and the song is in the flesh
and it sings out through the mouth
and the liver it fills with sorrow
and the lungs they cry from the chest
and the heart it will turn
into a garden for ghosts

into a garden
a garden for ghosts
Track Name: tongues
the Word now falls back into silence
into starry, muted skies
fallen to fragmented expressions
He weaves His crown
He weaves it alone

and late into the night
in the empty hours the nothing hours
I burn Your Name bright on my tongue
we are living Word to mouth
I need nothing more
I will not cast these seeds on stone

I stand here beside You
broken-tongued and speaking fire
my lips were stained with time's dark wine
what are we to do my love
with all these things that cut right through
we are living without skin

we have woven darker threads
into our coat of many colors
we have spoken words like wolves

and now they fall upon fall on our days
and now they fall upon fall on our days

bring to me this tongue of fire
speak spirit from stone
sing to me in this language lost
and sing to me alone

...sing to me...
Track Name: nida
into the heart of the woods
the light of the sap the face of all things good
in a blue church in Nida
I held Your hand

Your fingers entwined with mine
listen! they are bringing fire
from the next world and songs to sing away
the grey mask of Time
circling I saw the birds weave
together the broken body of G-d

re-membering the Divine
re-membering the Divine

and there crosshatched in
amongst the pooling shadows
I could read the names in the grain of the wood
by the light of Your body
and the flame of Your Tongue

a soft skin of silence
covered over all sad things
and I held You close
looking into the Face of
ALL THINGS GOOD

a gift given
from the heart of the wood
a gift given
from the heart of the wood

and the birds have left the fields but not Her heart
and the birds have left the fields
but not her heart
Track Name: spiritloom
there's a body in the stars
there's a face behind time
there's a space in the ribcage
where the dark is as wine

where the altars and bonetrees
bow to breath and breeze
the quaking of blood and Body
as they tangle into time

these forms of the Spirit
all these shadows and lines
they are gestures performing
this Aurora of morning

and we are
yes, we are coming home

(I walked in the nearby fields
I watched the light take shelter in Your body)

and Christ, He is carried
on the crutches of the wounded wood
as He hangs from every tree

and Christ, He is carried
on the crutches of the Wounded Wood
as He hangs from every tree

* * *

now we are shadow
now we are form
now we are image
now we are born

weave my skin on the spiritloom tonight
fill my flesh with this heart of light
come down
draw me up
Track Name: wounded stag
Your Words are fire and honey
spoken in the voice of the Wounded Stag
no hunter shall trap the flesh that feeds All
in a night as black as forests
by means of entrails and birds and stars
held out on an olive branch
encrusted with souls

singing with Lazarus of strange mornings
singing with Lazarus of new awakenings
singing with Lazarus of strange mornings
singing with Lazarus of new awakenings

(singing)

come to me come to me come
take my torn flesh as Your dress
come to me come to me come
it's Your Name I confess
it's Your Name I confess

* * *
I saw You once when I was a child
deep in Your forest of night
you were cracking open these stars
to write with black fire on white

I do not dare to speak of these things:
the Letters, the Name, and the Bright
come to me in Your thicket of night
written in black fire on white
Track Name: threefold
listen now to the voice of the wood
I have heard
and yes, I've understood
read the word
in the braille of the bark
touch is the language of the dark

see through the eye of the tree
the love-knotted oak reveals the Three
and when she speaks in a primitive tongue
and when we sing we sing as one

come, oh come
New Jerusalem
born in the heavy-hearted one
my heart is heavy
wrought iron and oak
my hands are branches
broken by the weight of the word that You spoke

i've waited all night
for your darkfiretongue
for your words
for Aurora to come

speak to me in a primitive tongue
I do not understand this new tongue
I do not understand
all I've seen and all I've done
all I've been and all I've become
one as three and three
as one
Track Name: seed
you better beware my boys
and you best take care my boys
there's a reaper in the field
with hands of night

you better come here my boys
and you
you best give ear my boys
there's a whispering
and the birds have 'a taken flight

and he knows your name
I hear him call your name
and you will learn his name
when you learn how to want
oh, how you will want

and I can tell by the signs along the path now that he's walking
and I can tell by the weave of his words while he's talking
he'll fill you up full of night
until the light in your eyes is a dim dusk
he'll tear the stars from the skies and count
the scars on your horizon
he'll tear the stars from the skies and count
the scars on your horizon

and my hands are dust
all my works they are dust
fallen to the earth as all things must

hide as you may my boys
hide as you might my boys
there's a reaper in the fields with hands of night

and he knows your name
I heard him call your name
and you will learn his name
when you learn how to want
oh, how you will want

and I can tell by the signs along the path now that he's walking
and I can tell by the weave of his words while he's talking
he'll fill you up full of night until the light in your eyes is a dim dusk
he'll tear the stars from the skies and count the scars on the horizon
he'll tear the stars from the skies and count the scars on the horizon

this is the truth of his seed
and this is the truth of his field
all flesh is grass
and as grass it shall yield
Track Name: blackbird
there's a black bird
in the cage of my ribs
i can hear his song
all night long

and when he sings
the air it shatters
like a thousand shards of glass

and I will open my body
but I know he will not fly free.

Sorrow, she comes a courtin'
with her pale hands held in mine
and i will lay there
by her side
all night long
and we
we will walk
through this garden
of serpent trees
and i will yet dream
through this night
filled with falling stars

there's a bright bird
in the seat of my skull
and when he sings
he brings the dawn to me
when he sings
the air, it shimmers
like a thousand tongues of fire
and i will,
i will draw him close
and I pray he will not fly away.

Sorrow, she comes a courtin'
with her pale hands held in mine
And I will lay there
by her side
all night long
and we
we will walk
through this garden
of serpent trees
and i will yet dream
through this night
filled with falling stars

Tabor, Tabor:
